The fourth National Seed Sector Platform Meeting was hold with theme “Global Standards and Commitments” on 26th September, 2018 at Park Royal Hotel, Naypyitaw. The meeting was organized by Seed Division, Department of Agriculture with support of ISSD Myanmar Programme. The 34 participants from development partners, 24 participants from private sector and 42 participants from public sector attended the event.

Initially, Dr. Ye Tint Tun, Director General of Department of Agriculture delivered opening speech. He encouraged private sector to invest in seed production and asked ISTA, UPOV and ISF to help in improving field inspection system, establishment of seed testing laboratory, amendment of PVP law, improvement of phytosanitary, establishment of Myanmar Seed Association and its TOR, membership, activities, extension on seed business.

In the morning session, Mr. Michael Keller, Secretary General of International Seed Federation addressed a key note speech on trends in seed sector development. Dr. Florina Palada from International Seed Federation presented opportunities for Myanmar’s Seed Lab. Professor Duncan Boughton from Michigan State University gave a presentation on dry zone seed demand assessment. Jeroen Baas from Baas Agricultural Services discussed seed business opportunities in Myanmar. Moreover, updates on Myanmar Seed Association, LIFT Dry Zone project and ISSD Myanmar were presented. In the afternoon breakout session, four topics: ISTA accreditation, dry zone seed demand assessment, seed business opportunities in Myanmar and Myanmar Seed Association were discussed in detail. The meeting was successfully ended with closing remark by Agricultural Counselor, Frederik Heijink, Netherland Embassy.
